Balearia Caribbean has announced a daily ferry between Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) and San Pedro de Macorís (Dominican Republic). As of September 26, 2026 the route is not yet bookable: Balearia Caribbean's booking engine only sells the Fort Lauderdale – Bimini and Fort Lauderdale – Grand Bahama routes.
What Balearia has announced
- Route: San Pedro de Macorís (Dominican Republic) – Mayagüez (Puerto Rico), about 133 miles.
- Crossing time: about 7 hours.
- Frequency: daily.
- Ship: an eco-efficient ferry that could be the first natural-gas-powered ferry in the Caribbean, carrying passengers, vehicles and cargo.
- Terminals: a new passenger terminal in San Pedro de Macorís and adapted facilities in Mayagüez, both with a passenger gangway and a ro-ro ramp for vehicles.
- Investment: about 100 million dollars, including port facilities of more than 100,000 m².
When will it start?
Balearia first planned to open the route after summer 2024. The launch has been postponed several times while port works and permits in Puerto Rico are completed, and there is no confirmed start date yet. We will update this page as soon as tickets go on sale.
